Enjoy Every Sandwich

An individualist, archaphobic, libertarian (reformed former partyarch), possibly-armed, ifeminist, engineer, dog lover, INTJ, space nut, defender of misrepresented native species, atheist Flying Spaghetti Monsterist wire-haired man-goblin enjoying every sandwich while promoting liberty and neighborliness. I'm Contagious

Posting from: Tucson, AZ
Listening to: New Orleans Blues Exodus live rehearsal at Javalina's, The Drunk

I have been tagged by The Neural Gourmet for a little book meme.

One book that changed your life?
The Little Fish that Got Away by Bernadine Cook (illustrated by Crockett Johnson)
It was the first book I ever read entirely by myself. After that I could learn things on my own just by reading. I can't think of any more life-changing experience than that.

One book you have read more than once?
Trixie Belden: The Red Trailer Mystery by Julie Campbell
... and pretty much every other Trixie Belden book I grew up with. I'd hide my book and a tiny flashlight under my pillow and then throw the covers over my pillow, stuff my head under the pillow with the book and light, and then read way past my bedtime. I'd take great care in turning pages quietly sure that I was on the verge of my mom coming and catching me at any moment. I don't know too many kids who got in trouble for reading, but I did. No kid should be afraid of getting in trouble for reading.

One book you would want on a desert island?
Mark Twain: Collected Tales, Sketches, Speeches, and Essays
Mark Twain is my literary Warren Zevon.

One book that made you laugh?
Engineering Thermodynamics by William C. Reynolds and Henry C. Perkins
Dr. Perkins was my teacher for a couple of classes including my first thermo class. A lot of things were edited out of the book, but he would point out little things that he and Dr. Reynolds had snuck in that got past the editors- fake company or product names used in the examples whose acronyms were a bit off color or something like that. One that I do recall for sure that got by the editors is that if you look in the index (at least in the edition I had something like twelve years or so ago) you will find fictional entries for "Beat" and "Cal"- the authors being (or in the case of the late Dr. Reynolds, having been) Stanford men.

One book that made you cry?
Claire Wolfe and Aaron Zelman's RebelFire 1.0: Out of the Gray Zone.
Page 172.

One book you wish had been written?
The Interactive Guide to People
People are a mystery to me.

One book you wish had never had been written?
Silent Spring by Rachel Carson
That book has contributed to the senseless deaths of millions upon millions of impoverished people from malaria based largely on faulty information.

One book you are currently reading?
Tone Deaf and All Thumbs? An Invitation to Music-Making by Frank R. Wilson
A fascinating and encouraging account of how the human body works in the music-making process from a neurologist's perspective.

One book you have been meaning to read?
Tales of Wonder- a collection of science fiction by Mark Twain edited with and introduction and notes by David Ketterer
This is some of the earliest science fiction written. I found this little gem at my local used bookstore in good condition for half the cover price, and I took it on vacation with me but didn't get to it. It's next on the list for when I finish the book I'm reading now.

Tag five people:

I heard an interview with the author of the Tone Deaf book. That does sound like a fun book to read.
